history

Stadtwerke Bayreuth was founded in 1939 as an amalgamation of the electricity, gas, water and transport companies that had already existed for some time.

In 1951, the Franconian press was the first customer to be supplied with district heating. In 1954 the conversion from direct current to three-phase current was completed. In May 1964, the Kreuzsteinbad was opened under the name "New Swimming Pool" . The basin, which was then made of sandstone , was filled with water from the Sendelbach . In the same year, the Bürgerreuth open-air swimming pool was also taken over by the Bayreuth municipal utility. In 1968/1969 the 2.2 million Mark expensive administration building was built on the site of the former gas works on Birkenstrasse.

In 1968, 56.8 percent of Bayreuth households paid their bills in cash. Back then, public utility debt collection agents went from house to house and collected the amounts due. In the following year, it was only 42 percent who paid this way. The then director of the Stadtwerke Werner Spichal announced in 1969 that at the beginning of 1970 only transfers would be possible.

In 1971 the gas supply was switched from town gas to natural gas. At the end of the 1970s, the drinking water supply was expanded. Parking has also been part of the Bayreuth municipal utility since 1979.

In 1992 the first photovoltaic system of the Bayreuth public utility was installed on the central switchgear building. In 1996 Stadtwerke Bayreuth was reorganized into a legal form under private law: Stadtwerke Bayreuth Holding GmbH and its subsidiaries BEW Bayreuther Energie- und Wasserversorgungs-GmbH and BVB Bayreuther Verkehrs- und Bäder-GmbH. In 1996 the Stadtbad Bayreuth was reopened after the renovation. In 1997 the community of Heinersreuth was connected to the gas supply network of the Bayreuth municipal utility. In 1999 the Lohengrin Therme was inaugurated.

In 2007 the new ZOH (Central Bus Stop) opened on Kanalstrasse with fifteen bus platforms for city traffic and five for regional traffic as well as the customer center traffic. In 2011, the Energy & Water customer center moved into the building at the ZOH. In 2014, together with Regensburger Energie- und Wasserversorgung AG & CO KG and Bayernwerk Natur GmbH, the Tannberg-Lindenhardt wind farm with four wind turbines and a total output of twelve megawatts was built ten kilometers south of Bayreuth.

Since 2015, all corporate divisions have been operating under the common name Stadtwerke Bayreuth. The subsidiaries now operate under the names Stadtwerke Bayreuth Energie und Wasser GmbH, Stadtwerke Bayreuth Verkehr und Bäder GmbH and Stadtwerke Bayreuth Energiehandel GmbH.

Stadtwerke Bayreuth Energie und Wasser GmbH is the gas network operator in the city of Bayreuth and the municipality of Heinersreuth. Stadtwerke Bayreuth Energie und Wasser GmbH is the primary supplier in its network area.

District heating

In the heat and power plants (CHP) of the public utilities Bayreuth by means of cogeneration produces electricity and heat. The heat is supplied to customers in the Bayreuth public utility network via steam or hot water pipes. This energy is used for heating or heating domestic water.

Contracting

Stadtwerke Bayreuth offers contracting contracts for building owners, property managers and companies . All services relating to heating are taken over by the municipal utilities: They finance, build and operate the heating systems in the customer's buildings. Various heating technologies are used in contracting contracts, for example natural gas condensing boilers, combined heat and power units , pellet heating , wood chip heating or a combination of different technologies.

Self-generation

Stadtwerke Bayreuth operates eleven combined heat and power plants in the city of Bayreuth and is a shareholder in the Tannberg-Lindenhardt wind farm south of Bayreuth. The municipal utilities also maintain four photovoltaic systems. In 2017, the Bayreuth municipal utilities produced around 16,500 megawatt hours of electricity (+1,000 percent compared to 2010).

water

Eichelberg waterworks

Stadtwerke Bayreuth supplies the entire Bayreuth urban area with water. In addition, parts of the municipality Heinersreuth , Gesees , Warmensteinach and Haag are supplied. The city needs around five billion liters per year. Some of these come from the Ködeltalsperre of the long-distance water supply Upper Franconia, from spring catchments in the Fichtel Mountains and from a total of four well fields east of Bayreuth with a total of twelve deep wells. In the waterworks on the Eichelberg, which was renewed between 2017 and 2019, and in the Löchleinstal, the municipal utilities process the raw water by filtering it and removing excess carbonic acid and directing it to a total of three elevated tanks. They are located on the heights of the Hohe Warte and the Eichelberg. The municipal utilities can temporarily store a good 24 million liters of drinking water there. The difference in altitude creates a natural pressure that allows the water to flow to the people in the city without any further pumps. The Bayreuth municipal utilities only need pumping stations for the higher elevations of Bayreuth. Overall, the company looks after a pipeline network with a length of 340 kilometers. The quality of the drinking water is checked on the one hand by experts from the municipal utilities and on the other by external and specially approved laboratories. Between 2010 and 2019, the Bayreuth municipal utility invested around 50 million euros in the water supply.

95 percent of the drinking water in Bayreuth has the degree of hardness "soft", five percent the degree of hardness "medium". Water hardness results from the calcium and magnesium salts dissolved in the water. Water is considered soft if it contains less than 1.5 millimoles of calcium carbonate per liter of water.
