Wave pool

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A wave pool is a swimming pool in which waves are created artificially using a wave machine . This gives the bathers the feeling of bathing in the surf .

The wave machine is usually switched on regularly for a few minutes and is not operated continuously.

Wave generation technique

There are several types of wave machine . Which one is used in each case depends in particular on the size of the bath and the desired size of the shaft. In smaller pools, compressed air is blown onto the surface of the water, so no pendulum water is used. On the other hand, displacement bodies or oscillating vanes, which have a pneumatic (indirect) or mechanical (direct) drive, are mostly used for medium-sized wave pools. Another possibility are "accordion-like" bellows, which are compressed by air pressure and thus express or reopen water and thus draw in water. Finally, for large-volume pools, a large amount of additional water (pendulum water) from a reservoir a few meters higher is suddenly led into the wave pool, which generates the wave by rapid displacement. The pendulum water is then continuously pumped back from the basin into the reservoir. With this technology, wave heights of up to 3 meters can be achieved. In some wave pools, it is even possible to ride the breaking wave with a surfboard . In systems with pendulum water, the pool water level is lowered before the start of waves so that the water does not spill over when waves are in operation. The lowering water is either temporarily stored in the raw water storage tank (previously splash water tank) or in a separate tank.

Security aspects

Wave pools make the supervisory staff and bathers more demanding. The continuous movement of the water surface, the changing optical refraction of the surface and reflections make it more difficult to recognize people in need. Some swimmers also overestimate their abilities under the difficult swimming conditions in the waves. Therefore, the operators of the wave pools usually do without waves of great height. In addition, a safety line is attached to the distance to the wave chamber.

On July 29, 2019, 44 people were injured in a swimming pool in a giant wave in the Chinese city of Longjing.

Water treatment

The wave pool and, if applicable, the wave chambers must be continuously flown through with chlorinated pure water outside and during wave operation.

If a separate container is used for the lowering water, then, according to DIN 19643, the water must also be circulated and chlorinated there if the intermediate storage lasts more than 20 minutes.
