Regional train lines in the transport association for the greater Nuremberg area
With the exception of the Nuremberg S-Bahn , the local rail passenger trains operating within the Nuremberg Greater Nuremberg Area (VGN) are referred to as regional train lines (abbreviated as R-Bahn ), with the abbreviation R placed in front of the line numbers . They are operated by DB Regio Bayern and the private companies alex and Agilis and can be used together with the S-Bahn, U-Bahn , tram and public transport services such as the city bus systems in Nuremberg , Fürth , Erlangen , Bamberg , Bayreuth or Neumarkt can be used with the tickets of the common tariff system of the VGN.

development
The names of the regional train lines have existed since the VGN started on September 27, 1987. From the beginning there have been lines R1 , R11 , R12 , R2 , R21 , R3 , R31 , R4 , R5 , R6 , R61 , R7 and R71 . As part of network expansions, some were extended several times beyond their end point and the network was supplemented by lines R22 , R41 , R62 , R63 , R64 , R8 , R81 , R82 and R9 . With the last expansion on January 1, 2018, the R15 was re-introduced to Haßfurt.
Systematics and special features
The line scheme can be described as follows: The main lines are given a single-digit number (example: R 1 ) and the lines branching off from them are given a two-digit number that begins with the number of the main line (example: R 12 , the second line branching off from R1) . Starting with the R1 from Nuremberg to Kitzingen, all main lines are numbered in a clockwise direction.
From this scheme the lines fall and fall
- R5A : was the predecessor line to the S-Bahn service from Nuremberg to Altdorf
- R8 : is a line running tangentially to the Nuremberg metropolitan area
- R9 : was added later and is therefore clockwise between R5 and R6
- R15 : Despite its numbering as a branch of R1 within the network area, it has no connection to it
- R21 : based on the numbering, it is viewed as a branch from the R2 , but has no linear connection to it
- R35 : Despite the numbering as a branch of the R3 within the network area, it has no connection to the same
- R43 : has no linear connection to the R4 within the network area
These numbers are used in the route and network plans and in the VGN timetable book, on the course book pages and in some cases in the Deutsche Bahn timetable as well as on the display boards at Nuremberg Central Station if the train does not leave the VGN area (example: R3 Neuhaus ; Regional train from Nuremberg to Neuhaus). However, only the train type ( Regional-Express RE or Regionalbahn RB) and the destination station are shown on the train destination displays . In addition, the line numbers were also a point of reference for the numbering of bus routes, especially at the beginning of the transport association (example: 50 bus routes in Nuremberg in the R5 corridor, 200 bus routes in the Erlangen-Forchheim corridor of the R2, etc.). In the meantime, however, this principle can no longer be fully adhered to with the newer network area expansions (example: 900 bus lines in the Bamberg area, without reference to the corridor of the R9 line). Furthermore, some of the VGN tariff zone numbers were roughly based on the R-Bahn line numbers (500 to 700 tariff zones).

Until December 2012, the S-Bahn trains initially consisted of a replacement set with locomotive 143 and some "X-cars", after which multiple units of the type ET 442 were increasingly used.
Since the timetable change on December 10, 2017, the Franconia-Thuringia Express has been running every two hours on the new Ebensfeld - Erfurt line in the Ebensfeld - Coburg section. Diesel powered railcars of the 612 , 641 , 642 , 648 and 650 series are used on all non-electrified routes .
A special feature is the operational wing of the 612 series on lines R3 / R33 and R4 / 41 at the system stops

outlook
The city of Nuremberg wishes to put the Nürnberg-Buchenbühl stop on the R21 back into operation, but the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) has so far refused.
In addition, the city of Nuremberg advocates connecting the Rangaubahn ( R11 ) and Graefenbergbahn ( R21 ) via the north-western part of the Nuremberg Ringbahn . In the Nuremberg local transport development plan, this project achieved a benefit-cost factor of 1.57.
