Swell:

The Neukirchen – Weiden railway is a 51-kilometer main line in Bavaria . It branches at the station Neukirchen bei Sulzbach-Rosenberg from the Nuremberg-Schwandorf railway and runs over Vilseck to Weiden .

history

The impetus for the construction of the route was a memorandum of the "Nuremberg Railway Committee" of July 20, 1869 to the AG der Bayerischen Ostbahnen . It was argued that this was the shortest and most economical connection between Nuremberg and Weiden and that the route could also become important for freight traffic to and from Bohemia and Central Germany.

Construction began in December 1873 after the route planning was completed in August 1872. The metal was supplied by the Hellziechen hammer mill . The grand opening of the route took place on October 15, 1875.

In 1973 the previous branch line was upgraded to the main line through extensive construction work.

Route description

course

The line branches off from the Nuremberg – Schwandorf railway line after Neukirchen station and runs east to the intersection with the B 85, after which it turns north in several arcs. After the village of Schönlind, the route crosses the Vils and runs parallel to it to Vilseck .

After the Vilseck train station, the route turns to the east before the abandoned village of Langenbruck and leads past the southern edge of the Grafenwöhr military training area through the Etzenrichter forest to Weiherhammer . After Weiherhammer, the route crosses the Haidenaab and runs with it to Etzenricht . There the line turns to the left, meets the Regensburg – Weiden railway line near Ullersricht and leads with it to the Weiden train station.

State of development

The entire length of the line is single-track, equipped for tilting technology and not electrified. The route-related top speed is 140 km / h. In February 2017, the route class on a section between Großalbershof and Vilseck was reduced from D4 to A and the speed was reduced to 110 km / h.

Transport associations

The Neukirchen – Thansüß section is integrated as the R41 regional train line into the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association .

Trains

The Regional Express trains on the Nuremberg – Neukirchen – Weiden – Neustadt (Waldnaab) / Schwandorf (Regensburg) line are served by class 612 diesel multiple units ( Regioswinger ). These trains are winged in Neukirchen station (near Sulzbach-Rosenberg) .
