Pleinfeld is largely located in the Franconian Keuper-Lias-Land , the districts in the east are within sight of the Weißenburger Alb , a partial range of the Franconian Alb . The west of the municipality lies in the foreland of the Spalter hill country . The terrain of the municipality is flat to hilly and characterized by coniferous forests. The southern foot of the Schloßberg in the Heideck district of Schloßberg in the neighboring district of Roth is in the far east of the municipality. The 11th degree of longitude runs through the municipality.

Pleinfeld is traversed by the Swabian Rezat in north-south direction , which has dug a kilometer-long furrow with little gradient into the landscape. In the municipality this is fed by Arbach , Brombach , Rotem Graben , Iglseebach and Banzerbach . There are several chains of ponds, such as the Heiligenwaldsee , the Fürstenweiher , the Iglsee and the Mandlesweiher . The Great Brombachsee extends in the northwest and covers large parts of the municipality. Large parts of the southern and eastern halves of the municipality are taken up by a woodless open landscape . Only the mountain ranges are mostly forested. climate

Climate diagram for Mandlesmühle near the Brombachseedamm

Due to its location in Central Europe, the Pleinfeld market has a humid, cool, temperate transitional climate that is neither very continental nor very maritime.

Flora and fauna

Beaver dam on the Buxbach near Veitserlbach

Under conditions not influenced by humans, Pleinfeld would be covered with forests of different types, depending on the location (“ potential natural vegetation ”). The most widespread would be beech and mixed beech forests as well as oak-hornbeam forests and in the north acidic mixed oak forests. At present, the flora in the Pleinfeld area is, as is typical for southern Germany, determined by deciduous and coniferous forests. Large parts of the southern and eastern municipal area have parts of a wide open landscape with meadows , fields and only a few individual trees.

As in other parts of Germany, only relatively few large animal species live in the forests. There are different species of marten , fallow and red deer , roe deer as well as wild boars and foxes . More and more beavers are spreading along many rivers , causing damage to agriculture, which is why the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district provides voluntary “beaver advisors”. A variety of fish species found in Central Europe such as eels , pike , pikeperch , lake trout , rainbow trout , catfish and non-coarse fish such as carp , tench , roach , rudd and bream thrive in the waters . These fish species reach the reservoirs of the Franconian Lake District via the Altmühlwasser.

In areas of southern Germany, Pleinfeld has unique sand habitats that are protected as the Franconian sand axis .

Protected areas

In the area of the market town of Pleinfeld there are several areas protected due to nature conservation: four fauna and flora habitats , two landscape protection areas , two water protection areas and one bird sanctuary . The south of Pleinfeld belongs to the Altmühltal Nature Park, which was founded in 1969. The so-called sand axis Franken was the title of a project by several environmental associations to protect rare sand habitats along the Rednitz , Pegnitz and Regnitz rivers . Pleinfeld formed the southern end of the project area.

Expansion and land use

The market town has a maximum north-south extension of 9.98 kilometers and a maximum east-west extension of 15.85 kilometers.

history

middle Ages

Wolfram von Eschenbach,
author's picture as a knight in the Codex Manesse

Pleinfeld is located north of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes and was thus in Roman foreign countries. The Swabian Rezat formed the border between the Sualafeldgau and the Nordgau in the early Middle Ages . The place arose to the right of the Rezat and thus in the Bavarian Nordgau, while in the Middle Ages today's center developed to the left of the Rezat. Pleinfeld 770/780 was first mentioned in a deed of donation. Kunigund von Blienfeld transferred property in Ettenstatt to the Fulda monastery . In the 12th century Wolfram von Eschenbach was referred to as "my friend von Bleienfelden", which makes Pleinfeld a possible place of birth of the Parzival poet .

In 1302 Pleinfeld came to the Eichstätt monastery . Wilhelm von Reichenau obtained from Friedrich III. the market law . In 1486 at the latest, the coat of arms and the right of fortification followed . The latter right was hampered by objections from the Principality of Ansbach , the Burgraviate of Nuremberg and the Imperial City of Weißenburg ; Construction of the city wall did not begin until 1540. In 1500 the place belonged to the Hochstift Eichstätt in the Franconian Empire .

Modern times

The sand sea castle on a hill above Pleinfeld-Mischelbach was the seat of the Box Office Pleinfeld-Sandsee

A horse post office was first mentioned in 1635, a main customs office around 1690. Pleinfeld was badly affected by the Thirty Years War and was burned down by the Swedes in 1632; In 1634 there was no pastor due to a lack of residents. Around 1700 the place flourished again: The Nepomuk Bridge was built in 1695, the town hall in 1702. Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the place, like large parts of Franconia, belongs to Bavaria (see also History of Franconia ). In the course of the administrative reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

Pleinfeld achieved a new boom with the opening of the Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn . From 1808 to 1858, Pleinfeld was the seat of a regional court . On March 5 and April 19, 1945, the area on Bachgasse and Pfarrgasse was bombed and, among other things, the schoolhouse was destroyed. The end of the war in Pleinfeld was on April 23 when the US Army marched in , and the Nepomuk Bridge was blown up. Pleinfeld's population rose sharply in the following decades due to people being displaced and bombed out townspeople, and suburbanization effects set in later . In the 1970s and 1980s, major infrastructure projects followed, such as the construction of the secondary school, the indoor swimming pool, the Brombachhalle and the bypassing of Bundesstraße 2. The Brombach reservoir project in the 1990s changed the landscape considerably and Pleinfeld became a state-approved resort.

Incorporations

In the course of the municipal area reform , the previously independent municipality Allmannsdorf was incorporated on April 1, 1971. On January 1, 1972, Mannholz, St. Veit and parts of the dissolved community of Dorsbrunn (excluding Tiefenbach ) were added. Mischelbach, Stirn and Walting followed on July 1, 1972. With the incorporation of Ramsberg and parts of the dissolved municipality of Thannhausen , the series of incorporations was completed on May 1, 1978. All districts except for Veitserlbach and Regelsberg belonged to the Weißenburg district in Bavaria before the municipal area and district reform .

Population development

Pleinfeld's population is growing steadily and reached a peak of 7,525 on December 31, 2016. Another 500 people have their second home in Pleinfeld .

According to the population forecast, the number of inhabitants in Pleinfeld will continue to rise slightly and will level off at around 7,600 by the 2030s.

coat of arms

Pleinfeld coat of arms, a work of art made of colored gravel
Coat of arms of Pleinfeld
Blazon : “Under a red shield head, in it a horizontal silver bishop's staff, quartered; 1 and 4: silver, 2: black, 3: red "
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms of February 24, 1486 became valid with the imperial seal of November 29, 1486. The crosier refers to the bishopric of Eichstätt and reminds of the long reign up to the secularization of 1802. For a long time there was uncertainty about the colors of the coat of arms. The head of the shield and the staff of the bishop changed from red to gold and silver; the crossing was alternately silver and black or silver and red, in the 19th century silver and blue because it belonged to Bavaria. In 1984 the coat of arms was discovered, from which the original and today's colors emerge.

The flag of Pleinfeld consists of two vertical stripes of equal size in red and white; in the middle of the flag is the coat of arms.
