The BOB campaign is a campaign against alcohol in road traffic.

It is originally from Belgium , where it has existed since 1995 and is very successful. About 96% of the local population knows BOB and over 50% have already been BOB. There is evidence of a connection between BOB and the decline in the number of accidents, especially those with severe consequences. Evaluations have also shown that in Belgium the number of unconsequential drunk driving is falling sharply.

BOB is not an abbreviation, but the name of the person in a group who, by arrangement, does not drink alcohol and brings themselves and their passengers home safely. BOB is responsible for driving and is aware of it. He documents this assumption of responsibility to the outside world by identifying himself with a bright yellow BOB key ring. He will receive a free non-alcoholic drink in the participating restaurants, pubs and discos.

BOB is now well-known in other European countries, such as the Netherlands , Great Britain , France , Poland and Luxembourg . In Germany , the campaign is especially widespread in northern Hesse , central Hesse and southern Hesse , Trier , Saarland , the Palatinate , in the northern Bavarian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen , in the northern district of Donau-Ries and in the district of Ansbach .

The police associations of the federal states involved are the initiators and primarily responsible for BOB in Germany. The campaign is aimed in particular at young adults who have not been involved in road traffic for a long time. Novice drivers aged 18–24 are disproportionately involved in serious traffic accidents. About every fourth accident with personal injury is caused by this target group. In the case of accidents involving alcohol, this percentage is even over 30%.

In Germany, too, the first tendencies towards a decline in the number of accidents under the influence of alcohol in connection with BOB were ascertained, this is confirmed by the first accident statistics from 2008, again confirmed by the accident statistics in 2009. It can be stated that in almost all project-related comparisons the accident numbers are significantly below the Hessian national average. The responses in the area of the Central Hesse police headquarters are often in the double-digit percentage range higher than in the state of Hesse. An evaluation by the Justus Liebig University in Giessen confirms the success of the BOB campaign in Central Hesse.

The Association against Alcohol and Drugs in Road Traffic (BADS) awarded the BOB initiatives in October 2015 with the Senator Lothar Danner Medal 2015 in gold.

Numerous companies and associations now support the BOB campaign in Germany. In addition to the police , these are DEHOGA , the DRK , numerous health insurance companies, insurance companies and banks, breweries and press houses.
