The German Hotel and Restaurant Association e. V. (DEHOGA Federal Association) is the industry association for the German hotel and catering trade. With 65,000 members, it represents the interests of the hospitality industry in relation to politics , the media and the public . He also acts as a collective bargaining partner on the employer side and carries out marketing campaigns such as hotel classification .

Founding history

The previous organizations were essentially broken by the events of the Second World War . There were individual areas, e.g. B. North Rhine-Westphalia , in which the state association had survived the war and the post-war chaos, but that was not the case in most areas of the Federal Republic . But as early as 1946, alliances were formed again on a local basis. In the same year, plans arose to merge the industry in the individual zones of West Germany . These efforts were reinforced by the establishment of specialist magazines , which from the outset were more committed to the goals of the hotel and restaurant association.

In 1947 a working group for the American and British zones was founded in Frankfurt am Main . This two-zone working group, which came into being on September 16, 1947, was chaired by Wilhelm Pörzgen, a hotelier from Wiesbaden . The committee was later supplemented by a representative of the regional association of Bavaria. The establishment of the two-zone Working Group was on record by a greater number Associations was signed: Bavaria, Hesse, Wuerttemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lippe, Lower Saxony, Oldenburg, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. The associations of the French zone joined at a later meeting.

But the industry soon required a closer union. They wanted to found a unified association that could appear with greater emphasis on the authorities and in public. On December 6, 1949 the time had come. DEHOGA was created in Frankfurt am Main. 74 delegates elected Mr. Willy Pauly as their chairman. In addition to several associations that had merged into the various regional associations over time, other organizations also joined DEHOGA, e.g. B. the Association of the Catering and Hotel Industry in Saarland .

structure

The executive committee, the large board of directors and the assembly of delegates form the organs of the DEHOGA federal association. The federal association, based in Berlin , is led by President Guido Zöllick and General Manager Ingrid Hartges.

The interests of the hotel industry have been represented since 2001 together with the Hotelverband Deutschland (IHA) , one of the two professional associations of DEHOGA; these are:

  • Hotel Association Germany (IHA)
  • Union of tenants of motorway service companies (UNIPAS)
Regional associations of DEHOGA

Companies operating nationwide and with supraregional concerns can, in addition to membership in the regional associations, directly become members of the DEHOGA federal association in specialist departments and the above-mentioned professional associations. The specialist departments within DEHOGA are:

The association itself is divided into 17 regional associations, which have their own organizational infrastructure and represent the interests of the trade in their respective regions. In addition to the 16 regional associations in the respective federal states, DEHOGA has another regional association, DEHOGA Lippe. The regional associations form the basis of the DEHOGA federal association.

Personnel development

The association supports and promotes a sustainable qualification of the employees of its member companies. To this end, they maintain three academies:

  • DEHOGA Fachakademie Saxony-Anhalt
  • DEHOGA Academy Baden-Württemberg
  • DEHOGA Academy NRW

One of the special features of the academies are nationwide qualification standards for cooks, service staff and housekeeping staff.

Initiative group hospitality

In 1996, leading companies in the hospitality supply industry (e.g. food or beverage manufacturers, insurance companies, manufacturers of sanitary facilities, etc.) joined forces in the hospitality industry . The initiative group is a group of over 40 selected companies. Together, the members and DEHOGA try to avert damage to the industry, secure its future and promote its reputation.

Association activity

The association represents the interests of the catering industry towards GEMA . Originally, GEMA wanted to combine the eleven different tariffs for the performance of live music and music titles played from sound carriers in two tariffs by the beginning of 2013. At the end of 2012, DEHOGA agreed with GEMA on a transitional arrangement for 2013. Many restaurants saw and still see their existence threatened by the new tariff structure.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , numerous companies in the association were affected by closings and falling guest numbers. In order to mitigate the resulting consequences, the association is calling for a rescue fund from politicians in 2020.

After the pandemic had slowed down, the association created a binding concept for the companies for the "increased protection against corona infection of guests and employees".
