Viabono certification
The Viabono certification distinguishes climate and environmentally friendly accommodation and catering companies in Germany. The certificate is awarded to companies on the basis of company key figures if they fall below the individually determined limit values in the requested areas. In the case of hotels and restaurants, the limit values are 30% below the average values. In addition, the establishments undertake to adhere to certain “basics”, such as not using lightbulbs, disposable dishes and disposable packaging, and to stimulate environmentally friendly travel for guests through targeted information. In addition, the Viabono mission statement must be signed, which prescribes various social standards, such as the obligation to provide regular training for employees. To collect the key figures, various business figures must be entered in a catalog of criteria and backed up with corresponding invoices.
Areas of the relevant business figures
The relevant consumption figures are recorded in a total of four different areas and checked using official documents from a third party organization or the supplier (invoices, declarations, etc.):
power consumption
The calculation of the energy consumption is based on the supplier's calculations for the consumption of various energy sources. The consumption relates to the previous year of operation. The following energy sources are taken into account in the recording:
- Current: For the detection of the power source current the proportion of current from additionally regenerative energy ( hydraulic power , wind power , solar energy ) is detected
- Heating media ( crude oil , local and district heating , natural gas , liquid gas , biogas , wood )
In addition, it must be specified and proven in this category whether there is [[CO 2 compensation]] for the emissions or partial emissions of the [[CO 2 ]] produced.
Water consumption
The calculation of the water consumption is based on the billing of the supplier for the consumption of drinking water in the course of the previous year of operation.
Waste generation
The calculation of the amount of waste is based on the supplier's billing for the amount of residual waste produced in the course of the previous year of operation.
Food
The evaluation of the food sector is based on various requirements and options. For certification, it is necessary that the company, if it is a restaurant or hotel, regularly uses a minimum number of regional and fair trade products. Products from a radius of 100 kilometers are considered regional. In addition, products from organic agriculture that are used regularly can be indicated.
The benefits of Viabono certification
After the audit has been completed, the company receives an overview of its own company key figures, which are based on five different areas: The overview includes the areas of final energy, CO 2 , water, residual waste and food. This information is intended to contribute to an improved environmental balance of the respective companies. The results of the Viabono certification can be used as an actual recording of various environmentally relevant key figures and thus support the environmental management of the respective company. In addition, with the help of a benchmark, the company is shown how it performs in relation to comparable competitors.
CO 2 footprint
Viabono GmbH offers companies in the hospitality industry the creation of CO 2 footprints based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol . The footprint is based on a CO 2 determined -Rechners, which in cooperation with the CO 2 - compensation company CO 2 was developed OL. According to the creation of the CO 2 footprint, the companies are classified in climate efficiency classes, which are based on the European labeling of energy consumption and the EU energy label for electrical appliances. In the event that companies score in the “A” or “B” climate efficiency classes, they have the option of offsetting the calculated emissions through a “Gold Standard” -certified compensation project. The compensation projects are also offered in cooperation with the compensation company CO 2 OL.
The calculation of the company-specific CO 2 emissions by the Viabono "CO 2 calculator" is based on the following areas within the companies:
mobility
The calculation of the CO 2 emissions in the "Mobility" area is based on business trips and employee mobility. Companies must provide information about the number of vehicles in the company, the type of fuel and the kilometers traveled by the respective vehicle per year. The information is supplemented by additional modes of transport used , freight transport and the arrival and departure of employees.
building
The CO 2 emissions for the “building” area are calculated on the basis of the annual energy consumption. The decisive factor is the composition of the various energy sources used for energy generation. When it comes to electricity consumption, the share of green electricity or the specific CO 2 value of the electricity mix also influences the end result.
Food & Beverage
The calculation of the CO 2 emissions in the “Food & Beverage” area includes information on the number of dishes served each year as well as the composition of these (“meat-oriented”, “mixed food”, “reduced meat” and “vegetarian”). In addition, the emissions are influenced by the proportion of the total volume of frozen food, regional products (from a radius of 100 kilometers), certified organic food and seasonal products. Furthermore, the beverages served and their type of production (from conventional or organic / regional cultivation) influence the company's final emissions.
To calculate the CO 2 emissions in the “Print” area, information is collected on the total number of pages of office paper used, the number, grammage and format of the printed publications for advertising prints and the newspapers and magazines purchased per year.
Cleaning / laundry
In the calculation of the CO 2 emissions within the "cleaning / laundry" area, information on laundry cleaning as well as the cleaning agents used and the hygiene paper are included. All information is collected on an annual basis.
Others
The “Other” area includes the residual waste and water consumption of the respective company.
DEHOGA environmental check
Viabono GmbH carries out the "DEHOGA environmental check" on behalf of the DEHOGA federal association. As part of the “DEHOGA energy and environmental concept”, this environmental certification continues the “Hospitality Energy Campaign”, which was promoted in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety .
Viabono web portal
The website for the booking of sustainable hotels within Germany, which focuses on the German-speaking region, is operated under this name. The web portal should serve as an information hub and offer its visitors the opportunity to find hotels with various sustainability awards and then to book them. In 2018, over 6000 companies were listed. In addition to the members of the hotel cooperation Klima-Hotels , the following sustainability certifications, with which hotels and restaurants can be awarded, are shown on the website:
- Organic seal
- DEHOGA environmental check
- ECARF quality seal
- Quality hosts for hiking in Germany
