IC 542 is a lenticular galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Hydra south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 392 million light years from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on April 22, 1892 .
