IC 557 is a lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a with an active galaxy core in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 266 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 2984 , IC 552 , IC 556 .
The object was discovered on April 22, 1892 by the astronomer Stéphane Javelle and later listed by Johan Dreyer in his index catalog .
