IC 564 is a Hubble-type Scd spiral galaxy in the constellation Sextant south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 261 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light years in diameter . Together with IC 563 it forms the pair of galaxies Arp 303 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class Unclassified double galaxies .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on March 21, 1893 .
