NGC 3769 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (r) b: in the constellation Great Bear, which is an estimated 35 million light years away from the Milky Way . Together with the closely adjacent second galaxy NGC 3769A , it forms the galaxy pair Arp 280 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class interacting double galaxies . In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3726 , NGC 3811 , IC 711 .
The object was discovered on February 5, 1788 by William Herschel with an 18.7 inch reflecting telescope, and is recorded in the New General Catalog .
