IC 196 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBb in the constellation Aries, which is an estimated 166 million light years from the Milky Way . Together with the closely neighboring galaxy IC 195 , it forms the galaxy pair Arp 290 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy pair belongs to the class galaxies with wind effects .
The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on October 20, 1889 .
