NGC 2872 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E2 in Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 138 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 90,000 ly. Together with NGC 2874, it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 307 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class Unclassified double galaxies .

The object was discovered on March 15, 1784 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel .
