NGC 2861 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble-type S0 in the constellation Water Snake south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 220 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 100,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 2877 , NGC 2878 , among others .
The object was discovered by Albert Marth on March 28, 1864 .
