NGC 5222 is a 13.1 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E3 with an active galaxy core in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 314 million light years from the Milky Way and about 145,000 light years in diameter. Together with PGC 93122 (also NGC 5222-2 ) it forms the interacting double galaxy KPG 383 and together with the closely neighboring galaxy NGC 5221 the gravitationally bound galaxy trio Arp 288 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5226 , NGC 5230 , IC 898 , IC 901 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy pair belongs to the class galaxies with wind effects .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2008ez was observed here.
The object was discovered on April 12, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which she labeled “Three. The two preceding vF, S, R “described. The other two objects mentioned are NGC 5221 and NGC 5230 .
