NGC 5231 is a 13.6 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa with an active galaxy core in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 290 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light-years across. Together with LEDA 214122 it forms the galaxy pair Holm 529 .

In the same area of ​​the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 5245 .

The object was discovered by Albert Marth on April 30, 1864 .
