NGC 5219 = NGC 5244 is a 12.6 mag bright, active spiral galaxy with a high star formation rate of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Centaur in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 106 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years across.

The object was spotted twice by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflecting telescope ; first on June 1, 1834 (listed as NGC 5244 ), two days later again (and listed as NGC 5219 ). For both observations he noted the identical description “vF, S, R, has a star near lower edge”.
