NGC 5240 is a 13.1 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation of the Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 102 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 55,000 ly. a. the galaxies NGC 5223 , NGC 5228 , NGC 5233 .
The object was discovered on May 1, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vF, pL, R, lbM".
