NGC 5239 is a 13.4 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc with an active galaxy core in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 313 million light years from the Milky Way and about 165,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5209 , NGC 5210 , NGC 5212 , NGC 5235 .
The object was discovered on April 13, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "eF, pL, R, easily resolvable, the stars almost visible".
