NGC 5227 is a 12.9 likes bright barred spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type SBb in the constellation Virgo . It is an estimated 232 million light years from the Milky Way .

It was discovered on May 13, 1793 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vF, S".
