NGC 5238 is a merging spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type Sd in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 15 million light years from the Milky Way and <10,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5225 and NGC 5250 .
The object was discovered on April 26, 1789 by the astronomer William Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflecting telescope.
