NGC 5254 is a 12.4 likes bright spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc in the constellation Virgo . It is estimated to be 99 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on May 6, 1836 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflecting telescope, who noted "pB, L, pmE, glbM, 2 ′ long, 1 3/4 broad".
