NGC 5255 is a 14.5 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Great Bear . It is an estimated 316 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on April 17, 1789 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “suspected eF, vS”.
