NGC 5221 is a 13.4 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic, interacting with NGC 5222 . It is an estimated 311 million light years from the Milky Way and about 150,000 light years in diameter. Together with the closely neighboring galaxy NGC 5222, it forms the galaxy pair Arp 288 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5226 , NGC 5230 , IC 898 , IC 901 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy pair belongs to the class galaxies with wind effects .
The object was discovered on April 12, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which she labeled “Three. The two preceding vF, S, R “described. The other two objects mentioned are NGC 5222 and NGC 5230 .
