IC 901 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 573 million light years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light years in diameter . Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair with PGC 47944 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5221 , NGC 5226 , NGC 5230 , IC 898 .

The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on May 24, 1892 .
