NGC 5136 = IC 888 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 296 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5115 , NGC 5129 , NGC 5132 , NGC 5137 .
The object was discovered on April 12, 1784 by William Herschel ( listed as NGC ) and on May 3, 1889 by Lewis Swift (listed as IC ).
