NGC 5131 is a 13.5 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa with an active galaxy core in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 298 million light years from the Milky Way and about 185,000 light years across.
The galaxies IC 4238 , IC 4239 , IC 4240 , IC 4242 are located in the same area of ​​the sky .

The object was discovered on April 24, 1865 by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest .
