NGC 5127 is a 12.5 may bright elliptical galaxy with active galaxies core from the Hubble type E2 in the constellation hunting dogs on the northern sky . It is estimated to be 219 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 180,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5131 , IC 4239 , IC 4240 , IC 4242 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 1991bi was observed here.
The object was discovered on March 13, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "pB, pS, nearly R, mbM".
