IC 883 = Arp 193 is an irregular galaxy of the Hubble type Im / P in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 314 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter.
Since the galaxy has two rambling arms , it is believed that it is most likely the result of the merging of two galaxies. It shows strong star formation , it belongs to the starburst galaxies and is very bright in the infrared light . The spectrum of its core shows emission lines from weakly ionized atoms (it is a so-called LINER galaxy).
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of narrow filament galaxies .
The supernovae SN 2010cu and SN 2011hi (Type II) were observed here.
The object was discovered by Rudolf Spitaler on May 1, 1891 .
