IC 1178 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 456 million light years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is a member of the Hercules galaxy cluster Abell 2151 and together with IC 1181 forms the galaxy pair Arp 172 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class galaxies with diffuse opposing arms .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6047 , NGC 6050 , IC 1183 , IC 1185 .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on June 3, 1888 .
