IC 1181 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . It is an estimated 447 million light-years away from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light-years across. The galaxy is considered a member of the Hercules galaxy cluster Abell 2151 and together with IC 1178 forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 172 .

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class galaxies with diffuse opposing arms .

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6047 , NGC 6050 , IC 1183 , IC 1185 .

The Type Ia supernova SN 2008ek was observed here.

The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on June 3, 1888 .
