NGC 6044 = IC 1172 is a 14.3  mag bright, lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . It is an estimated 448 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 80,000 ly. The galaxy is considered a member of the Hercules galaxy cluster Abell 2151 . The galaxies NGC 6043 , NGC 6045 , NGC 6047 , NGC 6050 are still in the same area of the sky .

The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on June 27, 1886 . For reasons that have not yet been clarified, the observation of Guillaume Bigourdan on June 8, 1888 with an identical position and description under IC 1172 led to an entry in the index catalog .
