IC 1161 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Serpens at the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 467 million light years from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light years in diameter. Together with PGC 1489740 it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair .
The galaxies IC 1155 , IC 1157 , IC 1160 , IC 1163 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on August 1, 1891 .
