NGC 6056 = IC 1176 is a 14.1  mag bright, lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 531 million light years from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is considered a member of the Hercules galaxy cluster Abell 2151 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6044 , NGC 6053 , NGC 6054 , IC 1182 .

The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on June 8, 1886 . Swift's observation two years later, with an identical description in the same position, was not recognized by Dreyer as a duplicate and led to an entry in the index catalog under IC 1176 .
