NGC 6042 is a 13.9  likes bright lenticular galaxy of Hubble type e-S0 in the constellation Hercules and about 471 million light-years from the Milky Way center.

It belongs to the Hercules super cluster and was discovered by Édouard Stephan on June 27, 1870 .

Due to an error in the position information and a slightly different description, the observation by Lewis A. Swift on June 27, 1886 under NGC 6039 led to a second entry in the catalog.

Remarks

  1. SIMBAD is the only modern catalog with NGC 6039 that refers to PGC 56942 (= NGC 6040B ) and assigns the designation Arp 122 to these two galaxies .
