NGC 6040 is a 13.9 mag light barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Hercules . It belongs to the Hercules supercluster and, together with the later discovered galaxy PGC 56942 (also called NGC 6040B ), forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 122 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of elliptical galaxies close to spiral galaxies and disturbing them (Arp catalog) .

The object was discovered on June 27, 1870 by Édouard Stephan .
