IC 1170 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Hercules at the northern sky . It is estimated to be 435 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years across. The galaxy is a member of the Hercules galaxy cluster Abell 2151 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6039 , NGC 6040 , NGC 6041 , NGC 6042 .

The object was discovered on June 27, 1892 by Stéphane Javelle .
