NGC 6079 is a 12.7 likes bright elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E3 in the constellation Draco. It is estimated to be 341 million light years from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6071 , NGC 6091 , IC 1201 , IC 1204 .
The object was discovered on May 6, 1791 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which she labeled “vF, vS; with 300 power cL ”. Due to an error in Herschel's position information, the observation by Lewis A. Swift on August 2, 1888 under IC 1200 led to an entry in the index catalog .
