IC 863 is a lenticular galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 107 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly.
In the same area of ​​the sky are the galaxies NGC 5037 , NGC 5047 , NGC 5049 , NGC 5054 .

The supernova candidate Gaia 16afw is observed here.

The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on May 25, 1892 .
