IC 856 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sab in the constellation Coma Berenices the northern sky . It is estimated to be 181 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 55,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 851 .
The object was discovered on July 11, 1892 by Stéphane Javelle .
