IC 859 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 306 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 80,000 ly. It is likely to form a gravitationally bound galaxy pair with IC 858 . The galaxy IC 857 is located in the same area of the sky .
The galaxies NGC 5053 and IC 857 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on June 23, 1892 .
