IC 838 (also NGC 4849A ) is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB with an active galaxy core in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 927 million light years from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 4849 , it forms the optical galaxy pair Holm 495 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4859 , IC 835 , IC 837 , IC 834 .
The object was discovered by Rudolf Spitaler on February 24, 1892 .
