NGC 4676 = IC 819/20 (sometimes called The Mice ) is a pair of interacting galaxies in the constellation Coma Berenices , which is approximately 296 million light years from the Milky Way . The two galaxies collided about 150 million years ago and will merge into an elliptical galaxy in about 400 million years .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy pair belongs to the class of galaxies with signs of splitting .
NGC 4676 was discovered on March 13, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
