IC 816 is a ring galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type RSBA in the constellation Virgo. It is estimated to be 318 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter. Together with IC 817 it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair and under the catalog number VCC 2044 it is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster , but is too far away for that.
The galaxies IC 817 , IC 3724 , IC 3732 , IC 3773 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on May 5, 1888 .
