IC 817 = IC 3764 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 with an active galaxy core in the constellation Virgo. It is estimated to be 329 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter. Together with IC 816 it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair and under the catalog number VCC 2046 it is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster , but is too far away for that.

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 3724 , IC 3732 , IC 3767 , IC 3773 .

The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on May 5, 1888 .
