NGC 5917 is a spiral galaxy of type Sb in the constellation Libra . It is around 85 million light years from the Milky Way . Together with PGC 54817 it forms the galaxy pair Arp 254 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class galaxies showing signs of splitting .

The galaxy was discovered by John Herschel on July 16, 1835.
