NGC 5897 is a globular cluster in the constellation Libra . This satellite of the Milky Way , which is quite distant at around 40,000 light years, has a diameter of more than 170 light years. It is an extremely loosely structured representative of its class, because it has a very low star density even in its center.
The stars in the cluster show only a good one percent of the metallicity of the sun , which means that they were formed before the galaxy formed a disk and spiral arms .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on March 10, 1785 .
