NGC 5878 is an 11.7 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Libra on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 88 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter. In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5880 and NGC 5883 .

The Type II / P supernova SN 1988H was observed here.

The object was discovered on April 30, 1788 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vF, pL, E in meridian, lbM, 300 power". During his observation with an 18-inch reflector telescope in 1847, John Herschel noted "B, pmE, psmbM, involves a star 14th mag to northward".
