NGC 5896 is a 15.0 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type "S0" in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 855 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 75,000 ly. Together with NGC 5893 and NGC 5895 , it forms the optical galaxy trio HOLM 701 .
The object was discovered on May 23, 1854 by RJ Mitchell , an assistant to William Parsons .
